Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
NEW YORK – Following their endorsement of Kamala Harris for U.S. President, the Facebook group Greek Americans for Harris continues to grow with supporters of all ages and demographics joining from across the country, according to the group’s founder Harry Zikas, Jr. who spoke with The National Herald about the group in this pivotal election year. Greek Americans for Harris now has six who administer/moderate the group and over 8,000 dedicated members.
TNH: How did you become involved with Greek Americans for Harris?
Harry Zikas, Jr.: Well, it goes back to the 2016 election, which was a turning point for me. Like so many others, it left me shocked and regretful for not doing more to support Hillary Clinton. It drove me to take more proactive steps to support candidates I believe in. In 2020, Joe Biden emerged as that candidate, and having been inspired by his vision upon initially meeting him at a 2000 fundraiser, volunteering for his campaign felt like a natural choice. I started a Greek Americans for Biden Facebook group, which completely took off beyond all of my expectations. Now, we’re fully behind Kamala Harris and am confident that she will continue the progress made by the Biden-Harris administration.
TNH: Have you always had an interest in politics?
HZ: Yes, my interest in politics began in 1988 when I was a 4th grader and saw my fellow Greek-American, Mike Dukakis, run for President. That early experience showed me the impact of representation and sparked my passion for political involvement. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of serving my community in various capacities, including as a board of education member, councilman, and mayor.
TNH: How has the reaction been so far to the group?
HZ: The reaction has been extremely positive and energetic. Since Vice President Harris became our nominee, both group membership and fundraising have soared. Our members are increasingly engaged and eager to contribute more towards electing Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States.
TNH: Are you seeing more support from certain demographics and/or certain areas of the U.S.?
HZ: We’re seeing increasing support from all over the country and from citizens abroad, including in Greece and beyond, covering all ages and demographics. Vice President Harris is mobilizing key Democratic constituencies, particularly young voters and women. In just 36 hours after announcing her candidacy, she received backing from hundreds of elected officials, Democratic coalition groups like ours, grassroots organizations, and labor leaders. Voters understand that this election represents a stark choice: Vice President Harris advocates for a future that strengthens democracy, protects reproductive freedom, and ensures opportunities for everyone to advance. In contrast, Donald Trump is promoting his extreme Project 2025 agenda, which threatens to roll back Americans’ rights and freedoms, undermine the middle class, and jeopardize our democracy.
TNH: What has been the most rewarding aspect of being a part of this group?
HZ: The most rewarding aspect of being part of this group has been meeting fellow like-minded Greek-Americans who are deeply invested in the future of our country. It’s inspiring to connect with others who understand the stakes of this election and share a commitment to democracy, our freedoms, and opportunities for all Americans. Organizing alongside people who care so passionately about these issues has been truly fulfilling.
