HACF Presents Online Discussion about the Battle of Salamis

NEW YORK – The Hellenic-American Cultural Foundation (HACF) presents an online discussion on Wednesday, September 16, 6:30 PM, titled, The Battle of Salamis: The Naval Encounter that Saved Greece and Western Civilization.

Professor Barry Strauss will tell the gripping story of how, in September 480 BC, Greek warships faced an invading Persian armada in the narrow Salamis Straits in one of history's most important naval battles. Outnumbered, the Greeks triumphed through a combination of stratagem and courage. The Greek victory at Salamis remains one of the most tactically brilliant battles ever fought — halting the advance of the Persian Empire and setting the stage for the Golden Age of Athens by saving the first democracy in history.

Dr. Barry Strauss, Bryce & Edith M. Bowmar Professor in Humanistic Studies at Cornell University, is an expert on ancient history and military history and has written numerous books on these subjects. Named one of the best books of 2004 by the Washington Post, his book, The Battle of Salamis, was described by the Boston Globe as "a military epic of the first order."

Only the hosts and presenter will be seen by video. Attendees will be able to ask questions using the Q&A and/or chat function.

The event is free, but please register online, so HACF can make appropriate arrangements: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_41sOH5rXS1uNbi_UUJJ3Rw?utm_source=HACF+Strauss+Blast+1&utm_campaign=Professor+Mavroudi%2C+Thursday%2C+June+18%2C+2020&utm_medium=email.
