Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
ATHENS – Greek unemployment rate fell to 12.4% in the second quarter of 2022 from 13.8% in the first quarter and 15.8% in the second quarter of 2021, Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Thursday. More specifically, the number of unemployed people totaled 591,573, down 8.6% on a quarterly basis and down 19.2% on an annual basis, of which 370,000 were long-term unemployed.
The unemployment rate among women was 16.6% and among men 9.1%. In the 15-24 age group, the unemployment rate was 54.3%, followed by the 20-24 age group (29%), the 25-29 group (19.5%), the 30-44 group (12.1%), the 45-64 age group (9.2%) and above 65 (8.4%).
Among the country’s regions, Western Macedonia (19.7%) and Thessaly (17.2%) recorded the biggest unemployment rates, followed by Ionian Islands (16.1%), Eastern Macedonia-Thrace (14.9%), Central Macedonia (14.7%), Central Greece (14.2%), Western Greece (14.1%), Epirus (13%), Peloponnese (12.8%), Northern Aegean (11%), Attica (9.9%), Crete (9.3%) and Southern Aegean (7.5%).
The percentage of unemployed people not registered in Manpower records was 18.5% while the percentage of unemployed receiving unemployment benefit was 9.7%. The number of employed people was 4,167,239, up 3% from the previous quarter and up 6.4% compared with the same period last year. A 69.9% of employed people were wage earners, while 19.3% were self-employed.
