ATHENS – The Greek Police Counterrorism Service went into action to investigate who was behind a Molotov Cocktail firebomb attack on the home of the Supreme Court President that was quickly denounced by the New Democracy government.
A police officer guarding the home of Ioanna Klapa was injured when the patrol car was hit with the firebombs in the early morning hours, Greece assigning officers to protect high-level figures, including politicians, who could be targeted.
The state-run Athens Macedonia News Agency said there were seven or eight attackers who threw at least five Molotov Cocktail, the preferred weapon of anarchists who regularly tangle with riot police.
In addition to the fragments of five glass bottles, the counterterrorism squad is also examining CCTV footage from cameras in the area to trace the movements of the attackers, no group initially taking responsibility.
The police officer injured during the attack serves at the local Papagou police station and was not a member of the judge’s security detail. The officer was taken to the 401 General Military Hospital for burns to his face and hands.
Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said the attack would not deter the work of the judiciary. “We stand firm against brazen terrorists,” he said and added:
“The institutions of our Democracy cannot be intimidated. We strongly condemn this attack and wish the officer a speedy recovery. The immediate arrest of the perpetrators is an absolute priority of the authorities.”
Greek Police spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidou said Klapa’s home is protected constantly with patrols at regular intervals, noting that the perpetrators were apparently watching the movements of the policeman.
“They threw a Molotov cocktail at him to burn him alive. It is clearly a murderous attack,” she said. Investigations are in full swing with any material that can help either from the remains found in the service vehicle, or from video footage.
