Greek Prosecutor Wants Mother Convicted For Sexually Exploiting Daughter

ATHENS – After recommending a 52-year-0ld shopkeeper be acquitted of raping and pimping a 12-year-old girl, a Greek prosecutor said her mother should be convicted for sexual abuse and exploitation.

That came after a secret two-month long procedure in a case which rocked Greek society after it was revealed that 213 men showed interest in having sex with the girl and 26 defendants accused of doing so.

The prosecutor said the mother also should be found guilty of distributing pornography, sharing material of the minor with other defendants and exploitation. An aggravating circumstance is that she was responsible for the minor’s care.

The prosecutor stressed that exploitation involves coercion and facilitation through pressure, emotional manipulation, and encouragement for financial gain, as she’s charged with trying to extort the former spouse of the shopkeeper, Ilias Michos.

Earlier, the prosecutor said Michos should be acquitted of rape as well as pimping and collecting prostitution earnings, saying there wasn’t enough evidence although the defendant confessed and another, Ioannis Sofianidis, is also facing rape charges.

But there was a recommendation Michos be found guilty of aggravated abuse of a minor under the age of 14 years by a person entrusted with care, possession of pornographic material involving a minor under 12 years of age without coercion and profiteering, facilitating the minor’s involvement in prostitution, and possession of weapons.

There were protests in the streets of the neighborhood of Sepolia over the recommendation to clear Michos of rape after there attacks on his shop two years ago when the case broke and the anger broke out again.
