Greek President Condemns Turkey’s Decision to Turn Byzantine Church into Mosque

ATHENS — Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou condemned the Turkish government's decision on Friday to turn the historic Chora Monastery (Kariye Museum) in Istanbul into a mosque, a decision that follows the conversion of the Hagia Sophia museum recently.

Both Byzantine monuments are on UNESCO's World Heritage list.

In a tweet on the decision posted in English, Sakellaropoulou noted, "After Hagia Sophia, the Turkish leadership moves onto another provocative act. It turns the Chora Monastery into a mosque, thereby distorting the character of another world heritage site while undermining interfaith and intercultural dialogue."
