When asked to comment on concerns about Joe Biden, Mitsotakis responded that US president had a strong presence at the NATO summit, addressed critical issues and emphasized that the American elections are for American citizens to decide. He noted that while they spoke, a summit like this does not allow much time for extensive conversation with the host, who was as pleasant as always.
Regarding Ukraine, Mitsotakis stated that the summit made it clear that the country’s path to NATO membership is “irreversible” and highlighted the support provided by member countries, both bilaterally and within the Alliance.
Mitsotakis also emphasized that NATO is stronger than ever, with 32 members and more countries committing to spend 2% of GDP on defence. He pointed out that Greece has long allocated nearly 3% of its GDP to defense and is pleased that other countries are now honoring their commitments.
He stressed the need for Europe to increase its defence spending and enhance its strategic autonomy, which would also bolster NATO.
Addressing the rise of nationalist parties in Europe, such as in France and the challenges this poses to decision-making, Mitsotakis noted that centrist parties hold a majority in the European Parliament. This is evidenced by Ursula von der Leyen’s re-election as President of the European Commission. He suggested that fears of the far-right’s rise may be exaggerated.
On tourism, Mitsotakis remarked that visitors to Greece enjoy their stay and often return. He emphasized Greece’s responsibility to protect its tourism industry from climate change, including extending the tourist season to prevent overcrowding in July and August.
Regarding foreign media reports about the establishment of a “six-day workweek” in Greece, Mitsotakis clarified that Greece maintains a five-day workweek. He noted that workers can opt for a four-day workweek by adjusting their hours. In certain 24/7 industries, a six-day workweek must be agreed upon by the worker and accompanied by significant additional pay.
Mitsotakis assured that the five-day workweek in Greece will not change and emphasized the importance of protecting workers’ rights.
