Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
ALBANY, NY – The celebration of March 25th, Greek Independence Day, was held at the State Capitol in Albany on March 22 with six honorees from the Greek-American community, including two Ahepans, honored for their contributions.
Among those present for the celebration were AHEPA Supreme President Jimmy Kokotas, members of the New York State Senate and Assembly of Greek descent, the Consul Generals of Greece and Cyprus in New York, Dinos Konstantinou and Michalis Firillas, respectively, and His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America.
The Order of AHEPA was honored to be a part of this special day, according to a statement via email. Past Supreme President Nicholas Karacostas, Supreme Governor Ted Stamas, District Governor 6 Dean Moskos, and many AHEPA members from across New York State also attended.
During the Greek Heritage Celebration on March 22, marking the 202nd anniversary of Greece’s Independence hosted by the NYS Senate and Assembly, Senate Deputy Leader Michael Gianaris, Senators Andrew Gounardes and James Skoufis, and Assemblymen Michael Tannousis and John Lemondes, six Greek-Americans were honored for the special role they play in the fabric of our state’s communities: Philip Christopher, Jim Tampakis, Andy and Kalliope Chronopoulos, Despina Ioannou Axiotakis, and Colonel Ted Limpert.
AHEPA was proud that two of the six honorees are members: Philip Christopher of Gus Cherevas Estia-Pindus Flushing Chapter 32 and Colonel Ted Limpert of Syracuse Chapter 37. AXIOI!
Christopher has had an outstanding business career since 1970 when he joined Audiovox Corporation, and is currently the President and CEO of American Network Solutions. He was born in what is now Turkish-occupied Cyprus and has been the leader of the Greek-Cypriot community, dedicating 48 years of his life to the struggles of the Cypriot people for freedom and justice. He is the founder and President of the Pancyprian Association of America and the International Coordinating Committee “Justice for Cyprus” (PSEKA). Christopher was not able to attend the event for personal reasons.
Colonel Ted Limpert is a native of Syracuse. He was commissioned in 1982 through the Air National Guard’s Academy of Military Science. He became an operational member of Syracuse’s 174th Fighter Wing in May 1984 and was the 138th Fighter Squadron Commander from May 2003 to September 2007. Col. Limpert has over 2,200 hours in the F-16 and logged nearly 750 hours in the A-10 Warthog. He has deployed to Southwest Asia seven times, beginning with Operation Desert Storm, with subsequent deployments supporting Northern Watch, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. Col. Limpert was the 174th Fighter Wing Detachment Commander and 332nd Expeditionary Squadron Commander during the unit’s 2006 OIF deployment. He flew his 106th combat mission in October 2008 during his last OIF deployment. In 2011, he volunteered as the Senior Reserve Air Reserve Air Component Advisor to the COMUSAFCENT Qatar.
Back home, Col. Limpert served his community and flew his own aircraft to provide emergency medical transport to patients in need. Limpert currently serves the AHEPA District 6 Lodge as Director of Veterans Affairs.
