ATHENS – A project for an electrical connection between Cyprus and Greece is not facing any problems that can’t be overcome, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said, adding that it’s going ahead.
Speaking to the Parapolitika radio station he said that, “Greece is determined that the project will continue normally,” and said that it’s a key part of the European Union’s funding for energy, noted Business Daily.
He said the underwater cable will pass through the territorial waters of Greece and Cyprus and through international waters of the Greek Exclusive Economic Zone, saying that Turkish concerns about energy research off Kasos wouldn’t slow it.
“Turkey, which invokes claims arising from the illegal and non-existent Turkish-Libyan memorandum, sent warships that were at a distance and monitoring the situation,” off the Greek island, he said.
“In 24 hours the Turkish ships departed, none of the Turkish claims were recognized, there was no recognition of them. No permission was given by Turkiye nor could it be requested from the Greek side,” he noted.
He added that, “The laying of cables is absolutely protected, this type of electrical wiring is necessary to provide essential services to citizens. It is absolutely protected by international law.”
