PHILADELPHIA, PA – Greek-American Effie Bouikidis announced the closure of her beloved BYOB Greek restaurant, Effie’s, as the property at 1127 Pine Street is set to be sold, The Philadelphia Inquirer (TPI) reported on July 24.
After 27 years of running Effie’s while raising twin daughters, Bouikidis cited fatigue from rising costs, low margins, and the overall demands of the business. With a buyer lined up for the building, Effie’s last night could be as soon as this Saturday, though the exact date remains uncertain.
Effie’s closing marks the loss of a staple taverna in Center City, known for its inviting atmosphere suitable for both casual weeknight dinners and first dates. This change is significant for Bouikidis, 55, who has been part of the Washington Square West community since the early 1980s when her father opened Pine Street Pizza nearby.
Reflecting on the impending closure, Bouikidis expressed sadness, noting the many memories and friendships formed over the years. Well-wishers have been visiting with wine and flowers to bid farewell. Effie’s, which debuted in 1997 with Bouikidis managing the front and her mother, Loula, in the kitchen, has been a cherished part of the community.
The sale includes the 65-seat restaurant and its patio. The prospective buyer, who remains unnamed, has a new concept planned for the space. As for Bouikidis, she is considering a future in interior design.
