Greek Cypriot Negotiator Briefs Congress

WASHINGTON, DC – Fifty senior Congressional staffers were thoroughly briefed for more that 75 minutes on Capital Hill by the Greek-Cypriot Community negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis on Cyprus’ efforts to end the 40 year division of the island.

George Chacalli , Cypruss Ambassador to the U.S.  sat on the panel with Ambassador Mavroyiannis as did Andy Manatos, the founder of the National Coordinate Efforts of Hellenes who introduced Ambassador Mavroyiannis.

A press release by Manatos and Manatos noted the “the high level of influential Senators and Members of Congress who asked their staff to attend – one fifth of all US Senators – so that they could be briefed about Mavroyiannis’ assessment of the Cyprus talks.

They included:

  • The Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee
  • The Chairman of the Senate European Affairs Subcommittee
  • Over half of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Members
  • The Senate Majority Leader and Assistant Majority Leader
  • The Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee
  • The Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee
  • The Chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee
  • Senators on the Senate’s Energy Committee, Commerce Committee and Finance Committee
  • The Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee
  • The Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Europe Subcommittee
  • The Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Middle East Subcommittee
  • The Ranking Member on the House Appropriations Committee
  • The Ranking Member on the House Budget Committee
  • Cyprus’ top advocates in the House, including all of the Greek-American Members of Congress

Immediately prior to this briefing, Ambassador Mavroyiannis met and briefed the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Ed Royce (R-CA) as well as the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Middle East Subcommittee, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) and Congressman Ted Deutch (D-FL).

After the briefing Ambassador Mavroyiannis met and briefed the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ).
