NEW YORK – Though 2020 was a difficult year to say the least, there were a few bright spots, including many efforts to help those in need and ongoing virtual events. Greek-Cypriot immigrant and Guitar Guide Guru founder Mike Papapavlou continued teaching guitar to all ages, began a series of virtual open mic events and concerts, and was honored as the winner of Guitar World’s Guitar Teacher of the Year 2020.
“With patience, persistence and perseverance, anyone can play, do and accomplish anything on guitar, in their musical career or in life,” Papapavlou told Guitar World.
“Of all the categories to win in the Guitarist of the Year 2020 competition, Guitar Teacher of the Year was perhaps the most elusive,” Guitar World reported, noting that “while the other categories were decided by amalgamating the public vote, judges' choices and Guitar World staff picks, this one has been determined purely by way of nominations.”
“We searched far and wide for the guitar teacher who had made the most impact on as many students as possible, and based on the sheer volume of nominations, the victor was crystal-clear,” Guitar World reported, adding that “it is our distinct pleasure to announce the winner of Guitar Teacher of the Year 2020, Mike Papapavlou!”
Papapavlou told The National Herald, “As a Greek Cypriot immigrant who moved here in 2013 and started from absolute scratch, had you told me I’d win this award even a year ago, I wouldn’t believe you!”
Papapavlou came to the U.S. for his studies, earning his MA in musicology at Queens College, and found his passion for teaching guitar. The testimonials alone on the Guitar Guide Guru website are a clear indication that Papapavlou, along with a team of top instructors, provide a valuable service for those eager to learn how to play the guitar.

When asked about the most rewarding aspect of teaching, he told Guitar World, “Through music and guitar discovery, my students get a greater understanding of themselves and their unlimited capabilities.”
Following his win as Guitar Teacher of the Year, Papapavlou will also be a freelance contributor to Guitar World in 2021, sharing “tips, tricks and stories” online, Guitar World reported.
