Greek Court to Consider Case for Recusal of Judges in Golden Dawn Trial

October 12, 2020

ATHENS — In yet another delay in the years-long trial of Golden Dawn, the Athens Appeals Court on Monday found that there were grounds to consider a petition for the recusal of the panel of judges on the bench, submitted by Golden Dawn MEP Yiannis Lagos.

This new delay was complicated yet further when the new presiding judge appointed to consider the MEP's request then proceeded to also recuse herself, on the grounds that she had been the second assistant special examining magistrate in the main investigation conducted by the appeals court into Golden Dawn.

Lagos had earlier demanded that the judges but not the public prosecutor on the bench be recused for displaying bias against him and for violating his right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Following the latest turn of events, another panel of judges must now consider whether the impediment claimed by the new presiding judge is valid, so that Lagos' assertions can be examined either by herself or another judge.
