Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
ATHENS – A joint operation between Greek and Israeli law enforcement has led to the arrest of eight people charged with operating a criminal gang using yachts to carry drugs from Greece into Israel, police said.
The suspects, mainly from Israel and Ukraine, were arrested in central Greece and appeared before a prosecutor, said police, as they were looking for more members of the group, reported Reuters.
Among those detained was a 44-year-old Israeli man who authorities believe was the leader of the gang, a police official said on condition of anonymity, with police said to have found evidence the drugs came from other European countries.
Those were reportedly The Netherlands and Germany, hidden in trailers that traveled through Bulgaria into Greece and then put on yachts and taken to Israel, no report whether Greece’s Coast Guard had found any.
About 130 kilograms (287 pounds) of the psychedelic drug MDMA, ketamine and cannabis were confiscated, police said. The illegal profits of the criminal ring were estimated to be about 2.5 million euros ($2.76 million.)
