ΡΕΤΗΥΜΝΟ, CRETE – Shocking photos were released of the Greek-Canadian Emmanuel Kakoulakis, originally from Crete, who was brutally beaten by a group of five Cretans in Heraklion, Protothema.gr reported, in order to highlight the viciousness of the attack. Kakoulakis is a successful Sales Manager and Financial Security Advisor for iA Financial Group and resides in Montreal. He was severely beaten by a group of Cretans and had to undergo six hours of surgery and received 60 stitches in his head, both externally and internally.
The incident occurred when the Greek-Canadian, who is in Heraklion, Crete, on vacation with his family, made a remark after one of a group of Cretans in a coffee bar burned Kakoulakis’ hand with a cigarette.
The remark apparently offended the Cretans who reacted violently and severely beat Kakoulakis in front of his children.
Kakoulakis was immediately taken to the Venizelio Hospital with severe head injuries and underwent the hours-long surgery.
It should be noted that since the attack, two of the perpetrators have been identified, including a 31-year-old man from the village of Mylopotamos and a 32-year-old man from the area of the municipality of Malevizio, while according to information, two others are being sought, Protothema.gr reported.
Kakoulakis is still hospitalized and on July 22 the Canadian ambassador was scheduled to visit him, showing the support of the Canadian government for its citizen.
The victim’s lawyer Manolis Troulis told Protothema.gr: “Those who witnessed the incident were stunned by the brutality of the vicious attack on the Greek-Canadian father from Crete for a trivial reason and in front of his children. He underwent six hours of surgery on his face and head during which he had to undergo a tracheotomy due to the severity of his multiple injuries. The brutal attack by the pack of bullies put his life in danger, and when they found that their victim was now unconscious and covered in blood, they fled to avoid the consequences, not caring about his condition. The authorities are very close to identifying all the persons involved in the attack. This senseless and unjustified aggression not only harms people but also undermines the basic values of our Cretan society. It is imperative that society comes together and acts decisively to protect our families and ensure they can live in dignity and safety. The family will do whatever is necessary to hold the perpetrators accountable and punish them in an exemplary manner and thus send a resounding message that such behavior will not be tolerated by anyone.”
