Greek-American Koula Karabatsos Is Mourned

LOWELL, MA – Koula (Liachames) Karabatsos, age 93, of Lowell, died after a short illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Theodore Karabatsos who predeceased her in May, 2017.

Born in Lowell, Koula was the daughter of the late Angelo and Kereacoula (Beldekas) Liachames, Greek immigrants who raised their family in a loving environment. The family moved to Woburn, MA where she was educated in that city's school system. She returned to Lowell when she met Theodore Karabatsos, to whom she would be married for 67 years.

Although most of her life was dedicated to raising a family, she held several part-time positions through the years including the men's department of Pollard's Department Store, Star Market, and Anesthesiology Associates. She volunteered often when her sons attended the Hellenic American School and spent her spare time, doing what she enjoyed – cooking, crafts, shopping, and having coffee/lunch with friends.

Koula's family was her life and she devoted herself to them. She was always there for her children, loved to read, color, and play with her grandchildren and doted over her great-granddaughter.

A wonderful cook, she created a book of her recipes that is treasured by the family. She was known to dress up in crazy costumes at Halloween, smoke cigars, and have anything and everything anyone needed in her purse. She was not only Yiayia to her family, but also to their friends who enjoyed her laughter and personality.

She is survived by her two sons, Lewis and his wife Susan (Callery) of Lowell, MA and Angelo and his wife Mary (Barrows) of Newburyport, MA; four grandchildren, Todd and his wife Maureen (Jakiela) of Dracut, MA, Evan and his wife Brittany (Groebe) of Melrose, MA, Alexandra of Washington, D.C. and Hannah of New Haven, CT; and great granddaughter, Theadora of Dracut, MA. She also leaves behind her great friends and neighbors, Colette Lyons and Ken and Paula Williams.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Georgia Pournaras, Photene Koniares, Olga Liachames, Vasillios Liachames, and Elias Liachames and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Antonios and Panagiota Karabatsos.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation and thanks to Dr. Douglas Mesler, Dr. Roy Maletz, and their office staff for their dedication to and support of Koula's health over the years.

The funeral service was held on Monday, September 27 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell. The burial service was private. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to either the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church or to the American Lung Association.
