NEW YORK – Greek-American Elaina Poulos spoke with The National Herald about her experience auditioning on Greece’s Got Talent (Ellada Exeis Talento), the competition show which is currently in its seventh season. The freshman at Fordham University is studying Political Science while also pursuing her passion for singing. The audition was filmed in Greece in mid-October and aired on the Greek channel ANT1 in January.
TNH: Tell us a bit about your background, where were you born and raised, and where in Greece your family is originally from?
Elaina Poulos: I was born and raised in New York and am a proud second generation Greek-American. My grandparents immigrated from Nafpaktos, Serres, and Arkadia. I am very involved in the Greek community in New York. I am an active member of my church’s (Holy Trinity New Rochelle) youth choir. I also was Miss Nafpaktos in the Miss Greek Independence Pageant. Furthermore, I have sung at Greek venues in Astoria.
TNH: Did you always want to pursue a career in music?
EP: Ever since I was four years old I knew I wanted to be a singer. It’s been my passion since I was a little girl. I have participated in plays and musicals at my school. In addition, I also take voice lessons. I recently have been focusing on singing Greek music because it makes me feel more close to my culture.
TNH: How did you first hear about the show and how did you decide to participate? What was the experience like?
EP: I remember seeing the flyer for the show on Instagram and I knew that I just had to participate. This has always been my dream so I decided to take action and audition for the show. My experience on the show was very fun and it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am so grateful to have been able to share my talent with all of Greece. It was an honor to be on the show.
TNH: How important has the support of your family and friends been?
EP: The support of my family and friends has been essential to me chasing my dream. I am so fortunate to have loving parents who believe in me and encourage me to follow my dreams.
TNH: What are you working on next?
EP: Currently, I am a freshman studying Political Science at Fordham University, but I hope I can release my first song soon. Being on the show gave me the push I needed to work on taking my career to the next level.
