Greek-American Demetra Michailides Passes Away at 91

LOWELL,MA – It is with great sadness that the family of Demetra (Deliakis) Michailides announce her passing at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, George Michailides.

Demetra was born on October 26, 1930 in Koufalia, a suburb of Thessalonika, daughter of Athanasios and Katina Deliakis. She met George from a nearby town, Katahas, they were married in May of 1953 and had three sons. Demetra immigrated to the United States with her family in 1965 settling in Lowell, Massachusetts. She worked as a seamstress for many years at Robert Leonard Manufacturing and was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society of the Holy Trinity Church in Lowell. Demetra and George both worked very hard to provide for their family and proudly sent all of their children to college.

In 1990, Demetra and her husband moved to Clearwater, Florida, a place they called home for over thirty years. During her time in Florida, Demetra found much joy in riding her bike around the neighborhood, swimming at Clearwater Beach, and being an active member at her church. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Demetra was happiest when spending time with her family and watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. Demetra had many happy memories of clapping and singing along while her grandchildren and performed Greek songs and dances in her living room. She loved nothing more than cooking and baking with and for her family. Many of these family recipes have been shared with her grandchildren and will now be passed down to future generations. Some of her favorite dishes included keftedes, tiropita, spanakopita, pireskies, and koulourakia.

Demetra will be dearly missed by her three sons, Arthur Michailides of Clearwater, Florida, Eleftherios (Valarie) Michailides of Ewing, New Jersey, and Peter (fiancée, Ludovina Rosa) Michailides of Hudson, New Hampshire; her five grandchildren, Nicholas (Michelle) Michailides, Christopher (Sephera) Michailides, Irene (Jim) Stenson, Demetria (Brett) Barry and Yiannis (Allison) Michailides; and her six great-grandchildren, Wesley Michailides, Evan Michailides, Leonidas Michailides, James Stenson, George Barry and Sophie Michailides. Demetra will be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Her Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Lowell. She will also have a Funeral Service at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Clearwater, Florida. Interment will be in Curlew Hills Memory Garden Cemetery in Palm Harbor, Florida. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Michailides’ memory to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Lowell, Massachusetts or Clearwater, Florida.
