ATHENS -- "A very strong wave has arisen in Europe that wants to put an end to Turkish provocativeness," Alternate Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis said in an interview with Parapolitika radio on Thursday.

"More and more voices are being raised about the way Turkey is behaving. It must be made clear by Europe that this provocative behavior will not be tolerated," he added.

In particular, Varvitsiotis pointed out that the logic of EU appeasement of Turkey has failed. "Europe must realise that it cannot have interests in an unstable region. That is why it is important for it to acquire a strong geostrategic role, its own geostrategic autonomy," he noted.

Asked about the issue of sanctions at the December European Council, the alternate foreign minister stressed that "the Greek government is in constant negotiations, at all levels, striving to form the broadest possible alliance in Europe."
