ATHENS -- Main opposition SYRIZA, in an announcement on Tuesday, accused the government of adopting "bizarre tactics" in its handling of the increase in Covid-19 cases in Greece.

"Public health and tourism cannot be an area for experimentation," the party said, noting that the government has recently been sending messages for relaxation instead of heightened vigilance, at a time when cases were increasing and "confirming the contradictions and irresponsibility that govern its decisions."

"After failing to press for tests before arrival at Greek airports and not adopting uniform epidemiological control criteria at all entrances into the country, after having, beyond all reason, allowed traditional festivals to go ahead, it then sped to ban them yesterday, after having ignored the recommendatiosn of health experts' committee for mandatory use of masks in department stores without taking the trouble to explain why, it is now rushing to mop up the consequences of its bizarre tactics under the threat of a new, uncontrolled resurgence of the pandemic," SYRIZA said.

SYRIZA stressed the need for "seriousness and consistency, elements that are unfortunately absent from government policy."
