ATHENS — Greece registered 2,135 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, of which 13 were identified at the country's entry points, said the National Public Health Organization (EODY).
All cases in Greece total 95,137 of which 4,840 relate to travel from abroad and 24,679 to already confirmed infection cases.
A total of 562 individuals are intubated. Their median age is 65 years, 82 pct have an underlying condition or are aged 70 or more and 161 of them are women. Another 490 have been discharged from ICUs since the start of the pandemic.
EODY also registered 101 new deaths, bringing coronavirus fatalities to 1,815 in total. The median age of all fatalities was 80 years, 97.1 pct had an underlying condition and/or were aged 70 or above, and 721 were women.
Greece has seen a significant surge in coronavirus cases and deaths that is straining the country’s health system.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Tuesday that ICU doctors hired on temporary contracts during the pandemic would have their contracts made permanent.
“It is an act of recognition by the state for the important work they performed during the pandemic, but there is also an imperative need to staff the new intensive care units that have opened in recent months,” Mitsotakis said.
A second nationwide lockdown was imposed earlier this month until Nov. 30, although the restrictions will almost certainly continue into December.
