Greece Making More Beaches Accessible to Limited-Mobility Users

ATHENS – Greece’s beaches are renowned for beauty and cleanliness, but not for people with limited mobility to use the but a program is being implemented to make it easier for them to enjoy the attraction.

Some beaches are reachable only by boat but for some that aren’t it’s too difficult for those in wheelchairs or limited mobility to use them, which the Tourism Ministry is changing, said an Agence France-Presse (AFP) report.

An extensive beach accessibility program has been implemented to provide automatic ramps to carry disabled visitors right up to (or even into) the water, through a 15 million euro ($16.47 million) European Union fund and the state.

The so-called Seatrac systems take the form of a long metal ramp mounted with a sliding chair that carries the vacationer to the water’s edge and have a built-in remote for the users to use it independently of help.

With a simple button, they can raise or lower the chair. Moreover, the system is free to use. As well as proving useful for wheelchair users, the ramp could be used by other visitors with reduced mobility, such as elderly people or pregnant women, the report said.

A total of 147 of Greece’s 287 beaches have been equipped with the Seatrac system and an online platform lists where they can be found along with an interactive map for the users to find them.
