Greece Eyes Fourth French Warship, Cruise Missiles to Build Defenses

September 27, 2024

ATHENS  – While in a detente with Turkey, Greece is further building up an arsenal of weapons with plans to buy a fourth French Belharra frigate, with three able to carry Scalp Naval cruise missiles among their armament.

Greece had been bolstering its defenses against Turkish provocation before a rapprochement between the countries as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dialed down his belligerence, hoping to renew hopes of getting into the European Union.

Greece has continued to acquire weapons and in 2021 made a 3-billion euro ($3.34 billion) deal to buy three of the French warships with an option for one more, as it aims to replace old units that have operated for more than 30 years, noted Reuters.

The announcement for the fourth was made by Defense Minister Nikos Dendias at the Lorian Shipyards in France but no further details were given, including about the cost. He was speaking at a launch ceremony for the second frigate.

Greece has a 10-year purchasing plan to spend billions more on defense as the economy accelerates although the government said there’s not enough money to lower a Value Added Tax (VAT) on food that’s 24 percent on many goods.

Greece also is buying Rafale fighter jets from France and has a mutual defense deal and plans to buy up to 40 F-35 fighter jets from the United States which can cost up to $109 million each depending on the capabilities.
