ATHENS — Captain Theodoros Mikropoulos assumed the position of commander at sea for the second half of 2020 for the operation "Irini" at the Taranto naval base in Italy. The commander's ship is the frigate 'Adrias', while the naval staff of the company is staffed, among others, by 14 Greek staff officers.

According to an announcement by the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS), the Armed Forces are participating in this operation with a frigate, with flights of airborne early warning and control systems, as well as with officers at sea and in the operational staff.

The main mission of operation Irini is to implement the arms embargo on Libya, in the context of a relevant UN Security Council resolution. The operation involves 21 countries of the European Union. Greece has increased participation with means and staff from the first moment it was ordered to activate.

According to HNDGS, Greece will participate in the next two semesters until March 31, 2022, confirming its stabiliSing role in the region and its ability to contribute actively to EU operations and missions.
