Greece and the US to Organise Conference on Oceans

ATHENS – On the occasion of World Oceans Day, Greece, in cooperation with the United States of America, on Wednesday announced the organisation of the ninth international “Our Ocean Conference”, which will be held in Greece in 2024.

The first “Our Ocean” conference was held in 2014 and is an initiative of the then-US Secretary of State and current Secretary of State for Climate Affairs John Kerry, according to a State Department statement.

The conference was also the focus of a meeting between Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and Kerry in Washington on May 17.

It is expected to focus on ways to address the effects of climate change, overfishing and marine pollution. Both countries and non-governmental organisations will be represented, while it aims at commitments to protect the seas.

The protection and preservation of the marine environment is a separate chapter of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (Chapter 12), the observance of which is a fundamental principle for Greece.
