Girl, 8, Drowns in Greek Children’s Summer Camp Pool, Two Facing Charges

THESSALONIKI – The drowning of an 8-year-old girl in an unattended pool at a summer camp in the northern Greece area of Halkidiki has led to the arrest of a 19-year-old team leader and 34-year-old camp leader.

The company that runs the camp in the town of Kriopigi put out a statement that said, “After lunch was finished and the campers were in their rooms for their lunch break, one camper was found to be missing. The camp headquarters was immediately alerted and a team of officials began searching for her in the camp grounds.”

It added that the girl was found unconscious in the pool and that, “First aid was provided to her with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of a defibrillator. An ambulance transported the camper to the Kassandra health center and then to the AHEPA hospital in Thessaloniki, where she was pronounced dead.”

Other reports indicated that the pool was left without lifeguards because the campers were on a rest break – not said if there was a fence or why it wasn’t attended at all times – and the company expressing “deep sorrow” over the death.
