German Official: Greece Has “Special Duties and Responsibilities” as Regards Migration

October 19, 2020

BERLIN –The German government's spokesperson, Steffen Seibert, on Monday acknowledged Greece's responsibility and 'special duties' as a country on the EU's external borders, underlining that the overall migration problem in the EU can be settled only in cooperation with the migrants' countries of origin or transit.

"We are aware that Greece has special duties and responsibilities as country on the external EU borders," said Seibert, replying to a question about the construction of a fence at the Evros border, which he said he was not aware of. "We are convinced that the whole problem of migration and asylum seekers' arrival in the EU can only be resolved in collaboration with non-EU countries, with the transit countries and the migrants' countries of origin. I can't, however, assess the specific measure," he said.
