German Amb Reichel: Greece Is a Valuable and Necessary Partner

ATHENS — The Croatian Ambassador symbolically passed the relay of the Council of the EU to the German Ambassador in Athens in an event at the German embassy late on Wednesday.

In his address, the German Ambassador Ernst Reichel underlined that the German presidency coincides with the pandemic and the ensuing economic downturn.

In this context, the German ambassador outlined the priorities of the German presidency, noting that they have been added to the existing and new ones that emerged from the pandemic.

In particular, he highlighted the need to complete both the 750 billion euro agreement on the Recovery Fund, which aims to alleviate the financial consequences of the pandemic, and the discussion of the new seven-year Multi-Year Financial Framework. The Recovery Fund, with the addition of the already agreed resources, will reach 1.3 trillion euros, he noted adding that these resources are a significant proof of European solidarity, although many deny its existence.

Focusing on the priorities of the German presidency, he highlighted the recovery of European economies. He said that Greece is a valuable and necessary partner in this endeavor, with the best European credentials and the experience of emerging from a serious crisis, having made great but necessary sacrifices. In this regard, he pointed out that Europeans should not only upgrade our level of solidarity, but also our cohesion and ability to solve problems and crises. Only united can we overcome these challenges, he said, adding that the current state of emergency must force us to act.

Finally, the German ambassador sent the message that as Europeans we must strengthen our cohesion and our commitment to each other, to European values and to the European idea.
