German Amb. Expresses Condolences for Greek Victims of Trier attack

December 2, 2020

ATHENS — German Ambassador to Greece Ernst Reichel expressed his condolences on Wednesday over the death of a young Greek professional and his nine-week-old daughter after a German driver plowed into a crowd in Trier on Tuesday, killing 5 people and injuring dozens.

"It is doubly saddening that a young Greek family is among the victims of the tragic attack in Trier," the ambassador said in tweet that responded to a message of condolences sent to Germany by Greek Foreign Affairs Minister Nikos Dendias. He added that his thoughts are with all the victims.

Reichel also expressed condolences over the death of Esther Cohen, 96, the oldest Holocaust survivor in Greece, that was reported on Tuesday. "Ms Cohen was a particularly warm and charismatic person. Her 2014 meeting with Federal President Gauck was memorable," the ambassador said in another tweet that included a photograph of Gauck embracing Cohen during his visit to Greece.
