Gennimata: Urgent Action Needed in Attica Ahead of Fire Season

ΑΤΗΕΝS — Attica has many and serious unresolved problems that need to be addressed urgently ahead of the fire season in the summer, opposition Movement of Change (KINAL) leader Fofi Gennimata noted on Thursday, after visiting areas in the north and east of the region.

After meetings with local authority officials in Agios Stefanos, volunteer civil defence groups in Dionysos and the leadership of the Eastern Attica fire brigade, Gennimata said there were serious shortcomings in the preparations and organisation to protect from fires just days before the fire season officially begins, including accumulated problems that have not been addressed after the destruction caused by "Medea" storm and other events in the winter.

"It is not enough to have meetings of the experts. Immediate decisions and measures are needed now because the summer is upon us and we must prepare so as not to face the worst," KINAL's leader said. She pointed to the lack of a legislative framework so that those impacted by Medea can get compensation and the failure of state services to remove fallen tree trunks and debris from woodlands in urban areas, creating very a serious danger ahead of the summer.

Emphasising that these issues needed to be resolved now, she said KINAL will raise them in parliament.
