Gennimata: The Agenda of a Modern, Social Democracy Returns as the Only Alternative

ATHENS — The parliamentary group of the opposition Movement for Change party on Friday organised a video conference with the participation of MEPs Nikos Androulakis and Eva Kaili and the presence of all MPs.

In her introductory remarks, party leader Fofi Gennimata said, among other things, that Greece and the rest of the world are living in an unprecedented time of triple crisis, in health, the economy and society, citing the wave of protests taking place in the United States over the killing of George Floyd.

She described the European Commission's proposal for a European Recovery Fund as positive, adding that it is now crucial for the next European Council to adopt this without changes, cuts, or the addition of special terms and conditions, without a "shadow memorandum" ushered in through the back door. "This is the time of prime ministers. As far as Greece is concerned, Mr. Mitsotakis must play an active role," Gennimata noted.

She stressed that the ideas and principles of social democracy are still as relevant today as ever and that the agenda of a modern, "smart" social democracy is returning as the only alternative, which is why imitations abound.
