Gennimata: Sending Golden Dawn to Jail A Historic Decision & Democratic Victory

October 22, 2020

ATHENS — The court's final ruling that jails the leaders and members of convicted criminal organization Golden Dawn is a historic decision and "a victory for democracy and recognition of the victims," said Movement For Change (KINAL) leader Fofi Gennimata on Thursday, speaking to CNN Greece.

Describing the former parliamentary party as "a criminal organization masquerading as a political party in recent years," she noted that the Greek appeals court decision resonates across Europe and the international community as a message "that there is no room for fascists in society."

Concerning domestic politics, she said that "Greece's parliament now bears the responsibility to permanently block Golden Dawn leadership and members from running in national elections." To this effect, Gennimata said she has requested of parliament President Constantine Tassoulas the immediate convening of the relevant committee.

Finally, she criticized the government for refusing to pass an amendment tabled by KINAL which pertained to this issue, and said she will continue to push for it, because "only together can we finally get rid of the neo-Nazis."

ATHENS - Greece’s Culture Ministry reversed a decision to take a donation from a private foundation that was tied to a gang rape allegation at a New Year’s Eve party in the country’s second-largest city and major port Thessaloniki.
