Gennimata: KINAL Aims to Be the Main Rival Force to ND in Next Elections

September 30, 2020

ATHENS — Opposition Movement for Change (KINAL) leader Fofi Gennimata on Wednesday expressed the party's ambitions to become the main rival force to New Democracy in the next elections, replying to reporters' questions in the party's first online press conference.

"We claim a leading role, we are not happy with 8.1 percent," she said and announced that she will once again be standing for the party's leadership in November 2021.

On the issues concerning Turkey and the start of exploratory talks, she stressed that these must be confined to the delimitation of maritime zones.

"For us it is a deep red line that we don't discuss the demilitarisation of the islands…it is a matter of sovereignty and defence, outside the scope of dialogue," she added.

Gennimata was also acutely critical of main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance and ruled out all prospect of cooperation, saying it was not a reliable main opposition, while rejecting suggestions that KINAL was "in danger of being absorbed by ND".
