General Support Ship “Iraklis” Christened, Joins Hellenic Navy Fleet

ATHENS — President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou on Monday attended the christening and addition to the Hellenic Navy of the General Support Ship "Iraklis", donated by the president of the Aikaterini Laskaridi Foundation, Panagiotis Laskaridis. A year earlier, Laskaridis had donated the first ship of this type, the "Atlas 1", to the Greek navy.

Defence Minister Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, in an address at the event, stressed that the Hellenic Navy guarantees sovereignty in the Aegean and surrounding area and is a deterrent for would-be opponents. He presented Laskaridis with a "Star of Merit and Honour" award and the rank of honorary Vice Admiral.
