BOSTON – The Very Rev Fr Peter D Costarakis, 84, of Quincy, MA, fell asleep on February 2, 2022. He was born on June 10, 1937 in Dara, Messinia, Greece to Fr. Demetrios and Presvytera Ioanna Costarakis.
He came to the United States on December 22, 1946 with his parents and his sister, Vasiliki. His father served the Diocese of Boston in the cities of Lewiston, ME and Holyoke, MA from 1946-1956. The family was then transferred to Mason City, IA where Fr. Peter graduated from high school. He entered the seminary in 1957, graduated in 1963, and married Mary Colitsas the same year. He was ordained to the Holy Diaconate on March 3, 1963 and to the Holy Priesthood on March 17, 1963, the fifth generation of priests in the family.
After graduation he was temporarily assigned to Holy Trinity Cathedral in New York City, and part time to the offices of the Archdiocese. In September, 1963, he was assigned to the SS. Constantine and Helen in Great Falls, MT and he established two mission churches in Butte and Missoula.
In December, 1964, he was transferred to the parish of St. Basil in Troy, NY. It was during this time that he earned a Master’s Degree at St. Vladimir’s Seminary in Teleturgics and Canon Law.
In January, 1978, he was assigned to the Prophet Elias Church in San Bernardino, CA and on July 28, 2001 Metropolitan Anthony of San Francisco elevated him to Archimandrite. He remained in San Bernardino until July 1, 2002 when he was assigned to Saint Spyridon in San Diego, CA until his retirement on July 1, 2006.
He was the beloved husband of the late Presvytera Mary (Colitsas) Costarakis; devoted father of Jo-Anne Hernandez and her husband Gary, and Fr. Demetrios T. Costarakis and his wife Presvytera Gloria; cherished grandfather of Paul-Michael Hernandez and his wife Kristin, Peter Hernandez and his wife Brenda, Mark Hernandez, Peter Costarakis, and Anthony Costarakis; loving brother of Vasiliki Boukis and her husband Stylianos. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
His Funeral Service was held at St. Demetrios Greek Church, 57 Brown Street, Weston, MA on Wednesday, February 9, 2022. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated and was followed by a brief visitation at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 17 Meriam Street, Lexington, MA 02420 or to Hellenic College Holy Cross, Alumni Association, 50 Goddard Avenue, Brookline, MA 02445. Burial in The Gardens Cemetery, West Roxbury, MA.
