Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
ATHENS – Four individuals were injured in a forest fire that broke out on Wednesday in a forested area in Sofiko, Corinth. According to information from the Fire Department, the fourth injured person is a firefighter from Sofiko who volunteered to assist along with his colleagues despite not being on duty. The firefighter reportedly suffered a heart attack and has been transported to a hospital in Attica.
During the firefighting efforts, three other firefighters sustained minor injuries and were transported to Corinth Hospital
A total of 42 agricultural and forest fires were reported nationwide in the past 24 hours. According to the Fire Service, 30 fires have been successfully contained while efforts continue against the remaining twelve. Civil Protection sources noted several incidents required aerial support.
The wildfire near Sofiko, Corinth, which started on Wednesday morning, shows signs of improvement. Ground and aerial forces swiftly mobilized as the fire spread through dense pine forests amid extreme heat. Currently, the operation involves 22 aerial vehicles, 140 firefighters, six forest firefighting teams and 37 vehicles. Fortunately, no homes are currently threatened and firefighters, supported by Civil Protection, remain engaged in suppressing the blaze
