Foreign Ministry Organising Event Linked to Hosting of “Our Ocean” Conference in 2024

ATHENS – The Greek foreign ministry is organising an event at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation on Monday afternoon that is taking place in the context of the 9th “Our Ocean” Conference, which Greece has undertaken to host in 2024.

The “Our Ocean” Conference, which was first held in 2014, is an initiative of the then US Secretary of State and current presidential climate envoy, John Kerry.

The 9th Conference, which will take place in Greece in 2024, is expected to focus on ways of dealing with the effects of climate change, overfishing and pollution of the seas.

“The absolutely outstanding issue is the protection of the seas,” Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said in a recent interview. “What is happening is devastating for humanity, for the next generations. The plastic that is thrown into the Aegean and the Mediterranean alone is a tragedy,” he noted.

The US State Department has welcomed Greece’s offer to host the international “Our Ocean” conference, which this year took place in Palau and the USA, while in 2023 it will be held in Panama.

“The United States welcomes Greece’s announcement regarding the hosting of the ninth ‘Our Ocean’ Summit in 2024,” the State Department said in a statement.
