Naomi Osaka's Secret Weapon to Win Australian Open: Greek Food

Before she went on to win the Australian Open as the best women's tennis player in the world, Naomi Osaka – of part-Japanese heritage – said for some reason she switched from Japanese to Greek food and then got a sign.

It was Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas beating 20-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal, although Osaka said she ate Greek before the two men played, leaving her to wonder whether the Greek fare propelled her to beat Serena Williams to get to the final that she won easily.

“It’s super-weird. For the past three weeks I’ve been eating Japanese food on the day before my match,” she said, after her 6-3, 6-4 win over Williams. “And yesterday, I decided to eat Greek food. So I went to sleep, and I wake up, and Tsitsi had beaten Nadal. I’m like, ooh, maybe this is a sign.”

She didn't say exactly what Greek food she ate and whatever it was Tsitsipas probably should have had some because after he surprised Nadal the Greek star was easily swept away in three straight sets by Russian Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals.
