Food Price Reductions in Greek Supermarkets Seen Coming in March

February 20, 2024

ATHENS – One of the biggest gripes Greeks have—high supermarket prices—will be addressed with reductions in cost as early as March because of government interventions, said the Development Ministry.

Officials told the state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency that food inflation is being mitigated after inspectors checked markets to ensure there is no profiteering or price gouging.

The ministry also stated that it has taken measures to tackle the issue of food waste, such as offering products at particularly low prices to interested consumers and encouraging markets to provide more legitimate deals.

The list of products subject to review for price increases, and for which—according to current legislation—businesses cannot carry out promotional actions for the next three months, has also been expanded.

This includes an extension of the list of fresh products for which “net prices” are applied, with the addition of the “fresh goat” and “fresh lamb” categories, the report noted, emphasizing that food prices are one of the highest priorities for consumers.
