FM Dendias Briefed Antonio Guterres on Turkish Provocations

September 5, 2020

NEW YORK — Foreign Affairs Minister Nikos Dendias briefed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Turkey’s provocations against peace and regional stability in the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean, at their meeting in New York on Friday.

The minister told Guterres about the Greece-Egypt agreement on the demarcation of maritime zones, the Cyprus issue, and also delivered a letter from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the Secretary-General regarding Turkish violations, and he requested that this be forwarded to the president of the Security Council.

Dendias also spoke with the US State Department’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Philip T. Reeker about developments in the eastern Mediterranean, and he will also be speaking with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Saturday, according to diplomatic sources.

“I would like to reiterate that Greece is not negotiating with Turkey. Greece has made it clear that negotiations with Turkey can take place as soon as Turkish ships withdraw from the Greek continental shelf, not as long as they remain there," he stressed.
