CORFU – A fire that broke out at the cruiseship 'MSC Lirica', which has been tied up at the Corfu port for winter, was put out late on Friday after concerted efforts managed to prevent its spread to the interior.
It started around 15.30 on starboard and tore through the ships boats, reaching the cabins.
The Fire Brigade said it had a hard time containing the fire. Eight water trucks and 28 firefighters battled the blaze, with help from Epirus, the local and regional authorities, as well as the crew, all of whom were safe.
Coordinator of Epirus, West Macedonia and Islands Fire Brigade Dimitrios Kontogiannis said "it was a very difficult fire on a ship" that involved complicated efforts, "with groups onboard, with ferries and with tugboats, which managed to restrict the fire externally and prevent it from spreading inside the cruiseship."
Although the fire is out, some firefighters will remain on the ship overnight to ensure there is no rekindling, while the Corfu port authorities placed floating protectors against pollution around the ship, preventatively.
The causes remain unknown.
