Fire in Southern Corfu Under Control (Video)

A brushfire that broke out in the southern part of Corfu island, in the Ionian Sea, is under control, the Fire Brigade said late on Tuesday.

The fire forced the evacuation of two villages, Neochori and Paleochori, after flames fanned by strong winds reached the courtyards of homes. Flames consumed some wooden structures put up by Roma in the areas.

Ionian Island fire chief Andreas Rizos old Athens-Macedonian News Agency that “at this time, the fire is receding and under full control, without endangering homes.”

Four days ago another brushfire in the same area burned 8 hectares (80 stremmas) of grassland, reaching the same villages.

Firefighters will be standing by, while the Corfu Fire Brigade is investigating both incidents.
