Fire Broke Out on Mount Athos

ATHENS — A fire broke out on Wednesday on Mount Athos, where strong ground and air firefighting forces are operating.

The fire, according to sources, started for an unknown reason at 11:45 in the morning in olive groves, near the Pantokratoros Monastery, but the monastery is not threatened. The work of the firefighters is hampered by strong winds blowing in the area.

Two firefighting aircraft are operating from the air.

ATHENS - In an updated severe weather warning issued, the National Meteorological Service said that the latest bad weather system "Elias" is expected to arrive in Greece on Monday, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms with a high frequency of lightning strikes and hail in many parts of Greece until Thursday.
