NICOSIA — Nine fans face 14 charges including arson, destruction of property and attempting to cause bodily harm after plastic stadium seats were set ablaze during a first division match between AEL and APOEL.
Police said that a court on Monday ordered the fans into police custody for three days on suspicion that they took part in the fracas.
Sunday’s match was interrupted for 20 minutes when APOEL fans invaded the pitch followed by AEL fans. The match restarted after police separated them.
Police said a group of APOEL fans lit fire to the seats and a nearby storage room while pelting fire crews with rocks, sticks, firecrackers and ceramic tiles.
Hosts AEL edged APOEL 2-1 in a come-from-behind victory.
