ATHENS – Three weeks after retired Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Albert Calibet , 59, vanished on the tiny island of Amorgos after going for a hike alone in the heat, his family and friends who went there looking for him suspended their search.
His brother Oliver, wrote on the search’s GoFundMe page that, “Despite our relentless efforts and determination, Albert remains missing,” although Calibet was a regular visitor who knew the island well and was a first responder familiar with search, rescue and recovery operations.
His brother said they are worried he was killed although it wasn’t said if their search efforts and those of authorities had checked the sea around the largely barren island that’s only 48.78 square miles in land mass and largely barren.
“I deeply fear that foul play has occurred as we found zero evidence of Albert anywhere on the island,” Oliver Calibet wrote. It wasn’t said if drones or dogs or modern technology also used to look for him.
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said at the onset of Calibet’s disappearance that Greek agencies had deployed various search and rescue teams, and they were assisting as much as they could.
“We are actively collaborating with multiple agencies abroad to provide assistance in the search for Deputy Calibet and will use every resource we have available to bring him back to those who love him,” L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna said.
He said they had left the island “fearing for our own health and safety,” apparently over the exhausting effort in the heat on an island with few trees and relentless sun beating down on rocky hills.
He earlier complained about search efforts from officials in Greece and said there was no response from US Ambassador George Tsunis, to whom they had reached out, and no report whether American military forces in Greece were offered.
“I also wish to thank the search and rescue teams who assisted us and those that donated to the GoFundMe to make search and rescue efforts possible. We were truly hoping for a different outcome,” he wrote.
At least 10 tourists have died in Greece this spring and summer, most of them elderly and going for hikes in the heat without what search teams said were adequate preparations, including water, hats, or cell phones.
Two elderly French women are still missing on the island of Sikino – 46 miles from Santorini – after a hike, one sending a desperate text message to the landlord of the apartment building where they were staying that she had fallen.
