Families of Greek Train Crash Victims Want Answers After Elections

ATHENS – With no report on progress of an investigation into a Feb. 28 head-on train collision that killed 57 people, relatives of the victims and injured are pressing for answers after Greece’s elections, which could extend into the summer.

Many of those who died were college students en route from Athens to Thessaloniki after first annual carnival celebrations in three years that had been canceled previously over COVID-19 health measures and lockdowns.

The immediate fury after the accident that was largely directed at the New Democracy government for failing to implement safety measures almost four years into its tenure has largely subsided.

But the families want to remind people of what happened and held a rally and memorial march in the center of Larissa, where a stationmaster only four days on the job said he made a mistake putting two trains on the same track.

They held a banner reading “I do not forget – 57 souls seek justice,” and black candles, called on the Supreme Court to oversee the investigation so it’s not swept under the rug and forgotten after the elections.

They said they also want the station to stop operating until safety measures are finally implemented but that isn’t scheduled to be completed until September and the trains began operating again.
