Events at Kehila Kedosha Janina Highlight the Greek Jewish Experience

NEW YORK – Kehila Kedosha Janina Synagogue and Museum, 280 Broome Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, announced its upcoming events that highlight the Greek Jewish experience beginning with ‘The Holocaust in Thessaloniki: A Special Conversation with Dr. Leon Saltiel’ on Thursday, June 6, 6:30 PM. Dr. Saltiel is Director of Diplomacy, Representative at UN Geneva and UNESCO, and Coordinator on Countering Antisemitism for the World Jewish Congress. He holds a PhD in Contemporary Greek History from the University of Macedonia, in Thessaloniki, Greece, and has been a post-doctoral researcher at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His publications include The Holocaust in Thessaloniki: Reactions to the Anti-Jewish Persecution, 1942-1943 (Routledge 2020), which won the 2021 Yad Vashem International Book Prize for Holocaust Research, and ‘Do Not Forget Me’: Three Jewish Mothers Write to Their Sons from the Thessaloniki Ghetto, available  in Greek (Alexandria 2018), English (Berghahn 2021), and French (Denoël 2023).

For those who missed it, the Kehila Kedosha Janina Ninth Annual Greek Jewish Festival was a great success. More than 10,000 people attended the May 19 event, enjoying over 1,400 bourekas, 1,000 Greek salads, delicious baklava, live dancing, amazing music, synagogue and museum tours, kids’ activities, and a special visit from Consul General of Israel in New York Ofir Akunis whose family is originally from Thessaloniki. Kehila Kedosha Janina expressed a special thank you to all their sponsors, community partners, and committed volunteers who made the event possible.

On June 2, the Kehila Kedosha Janina community participated in the Israel Day Parade in New York. “We proudly marched on our own community float representing our Romaniote and Sephardic community’s support for Israel, and even danced to live Greek and Israeli music,” the community said via email. “We pray for the release of all the hostages and know that Am Yisrael Hai!”
