EU Officials Confirm Receipt of Letters from FM Dendias about Turkey

October 20, 2020

BRUSSELS — European Commission officials on Tuesday confirmed the receipt of letters sent to Commissioners by Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, replying to questions on the press reports saying that Dendias had requested that the EU suspend customs union with Turkey.

"We can indeed confirm that we have received the letter from Foreign Minister Dendias to Commissioner Varhelyi. A copy of the letter has also been sent to Mr. Dombrovskis. From the Commission side what we can say is that we take note of this letter, including its call for legal action on the customs union and on considering a broader suspension of the agreements. We will analyse it and reply in due course, once we have done this analysis," said Ana Pisonero, the European Commission spokesperson for enlargement issues.

Questions were also put to the Commission's spokesperson for foreign affairs issues, Peter Stano, who also confirmed that a letter was sent to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Issues, Josep Borrell, but declined to comment on or disclose its contents, saying only that it will be given due attention and consideration and that the European Commission "will then act and reply accordingly".
