ΑTHENS – In a video message presented at the Nisyros Dialogues on the island, organized by the Georgi0s N. Mihalos Foundation, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew issued said climate change and overtourism are being ignored.
World governments have paid mostly token attention to climate change being worsened by the continued use of fossil fuels that are the major culprit but essential to economies, and Greece returned to burning coal to generate electricity in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that spiked energy markets.
The Patriarch said that climate change, which has brought global warming and could make Greece too hot to visit in the summer, is a reality and said the world should act “regardless of geopolitical interests and other considerations.”
That shows no signs of happening despite the growing costs, environmental damage and deaths, with Greece’s government saying climate change was also behind deadly fires and floods that struck in 2023.
He discussed the spiritual and moral roots of the ecological crisis and said that mankind apparently wants nature to cure the problem. “Man, although aware of the dead ends of his choices, continues to act as if he was unaware,” he said.
He also warned about overtourism and said that Greece should embrace alternate forms including religion although the government – acknowledging the problem – has opened the country to all-out development, including on islands and in what are supposed to be protected zones as well as some uninhabited islands.
