Does Italy Have a Navy? Rome Makes Demarche in Ankara over Provocations

NICOSIA – The Italian government has protested to Ankara in response to its provocative actions in Cyprus` exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

According to reliable sources, the CNA reports that “Italy is ‘particularly disturbed’ by the issuing of the illegal Turkish NAVTEX directive for investigations of the Turkish research vessel Barbaros areas in the EEZ of the Republic.”

The Turkish NAVTEX, which accompanied movements of Turkish exploratory and military vessels “violates the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus, but also the rights of of the Italian-Korean energy consortium Eni-Kogas which its Drill ship Saipem 10000 began in September its first testing for hydrocarbon reserves in Cyprus` EEZ following an agreement with the Republic of Cyprus,” the CNA wrote.

It was a close brush with death but a 40-year-old British tourist bitten by a deadly viper while at a yoga retreat on Cyprus is recovering after getting swift hospitalization to counteract the venom.
